Our Top 10 Favorite Pomeranian Dog Haircut Styles

If you have a Pomeranian and are confused about which haircut will suit them best, you have landed on the right page. WeKnowYourDogs has carefully curated a list of groomer-recommended haircut styles for your Pomeranian that not only look amazing but are also easy to maintain.

Before we dive into the details, we must warn you that you should never shave your Pomeranian. Their coat allows them to regulate their body temperature, and shaving will disrupt their ability to stay warm or cool off. It'll also damage their hair follicles, hence wrecking their double coat. Overall, it can even lead to conditions like Alopecia.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A HAIRCUT FOR YOUR POMERANIAN

Our groomers recommend the following haircuts, keeping in mind the double coat of a Pomeranian. These haircuts are recommended after carefully taking into account the following factors:

  • Climate: Warm climates are suitable for short-length haircuts to keep the dog comfortable. Haircuts such as puppy cuts, teddy cuts, or any other short-length haircut are recommended. Winters are more suitable for keeping their fluff long, hence haircuts like Lion cut, puffball cut, or long tail cut.

  • Activeness: Dogs who are more playful and hyperactive should have shorter haircuts because they are more likely to get dirty. Shorter haircuts will be easier to maintain on such dogs, and their fur will be less likely to get matted or tangled.

  • Health: you must prioritise your dog's well-being over anything else. Shaving or giving your dog extremely short haircuts can take a toll on their health as it'll leave their skin exposed, meaning higher chances of sunburn or other skin-related issues. Another problem with shaving your Pomeranian is that it will damage their double coat and can even lead to issues such as Alopecia.

  • Maintenance: Longer haircuts require regular and more frequent grooming compared to shorter haircuts. Hence, choosing their haircut will reflect how often they need to be groomed.

BEST HAIRCUTS FOR A POMERANIAN; GROOMER RECOMMENDED

1. Traditional cut

A Pomeranian's appearance is naturally fluffy, and a traditional cut maintains and preserves this appearance to the fullest. It shows the double coat and plumed tail. The length of their coat is preserved; it looks long and straight, while the inner coat is dense. The cut requires regular brushing to maintain its glory and prevent tangles and matting.

What the groomer does is basically trim the fur around the face, retaining its natural outline. The ears are given a slight trim to maintain their pointed shape with a bit of fluff around them. Ruff around the neck is the distinguishing factor; this fur is left full and long. While the remainder of the body fur is kept fluffy, the outer coat lies on top, and the undercoat gives it a volumizing effect. This also allows them to keep themselves warm during the winter. The fur is given a slight shape, tracing its natural outline. The leg fur is left longer with a subtle trim in a "feathering" manner. However, the paws are properly trimmed, and excess hair is shaved off. Now for the key feature, the tail! It is left whole and fluffed, carried over the back in a feathered manner, such that it is a plume of long hair. Of course, areas such as the anus, underbelly, and genitals are trimmed to keep them clean are free of debris.

Of course, this haircut requires extensive care and proper grooming for maintenance, which includes brushing up to three times a week; otherwise, the fur will matt and tangle. Further, bathing conditioning is a necessity for maintaining the coat. We would recommend this haircut for Pomeranians living in colder climates as well as for those who are less enthusiastic about playing outdoors.

2. Fox Cut

Fox cuts are quite popular among Pomeranian owners, as they bring out their natural features but with a twist. Basically, the face and muzzle areas are targeted and shaped so that the dog appears like a fox.

The muzzle is kept short and neat, enhancing the snout and resembling a fox. The fur around the eyes is trimmed carefully, making them look bigger and adding more depth to them. The fur in the neck area is kept slightly longer to create what the professionals call a 'subtle ruff'. The fur on the body is kept around an inch or two long, adding to the dog's slender build.
The leg area is trimmed as well and kept at a moderate length, achieving the feathering look but yet keeping it quite minimal. The tail is trimmed such that it appears to fan out like that of a fox. Hence, the short coat and fuller tail.

The haircut is quite manageable yet practical, which is why our groomers recommend it. With regular brushing, bathing with a quality shampoo and conditioner as well as getting regular trims every 4-6 weeks you can easily maintain the fox like appearance of your Pomeranian.

3. Show Trim

As the name suggests, the show dog trim is specially designed by groomers to accentuate your Pomeranian's best features in competitions and dog shows by following guidelines set by kennel clubs and show standards.
The haircut maintains a Pomeranian's full double coat but laying emphasis on the volume of the fur, the dog's short stature, distinctive ruff around the neck and a fully plum tail. It focuses on a flawless presentation that do not showcase any sudden changes in length or its texture.

The haircut highlights the fox-like features around the muzzle, eyes, and ears. The face is trimmed in such a manner that it does not appear round, and the ears are kept sharp and pointed. Only the extra fluff is removed. The neck and mane area are left full and slightly longer than the rest of the body; they are kept symmetrical yet smooth such that there's no layering. Legs are kept natural, with the feathering effect complimenting their coat. However, the feet are trimmed to avoid any matting. The tail, being the standout feature, is carried over the back and feathered out in a fan-like shape, balancing the overall appearance of the dog.

The show trim is, of course, extremely high maintenance and requires regular grooming. It is a bit of a twist to the traditional Pomeranian cut, sharing similarities. WeKnowYourDogs recommends regular brushing, fluffing out the fur, using high-quality conditioning and shampoos, and ONLY professional grooming. This will maintain breed standards and make sure that your Pomeranian stands out at the show.

4. Puppy Cut

A much popular choice among pet owners is the puppy cut that gives your Pomeranian an adorable yet fluffy outlook. The cut has distinctive features such as short uniform length all over the body making it easy to maintain, especially for those super active fireballs who love getting dirty.

The fur is trimmed to a uniform length throughout the body, standing at 1-2 inches long. However, owners can customize the length as per their preference. The fur on the face, muzzle, and ruff are trimmed to blend in with the rest of the bodily fur. All the edges are shaped neatly and tidyly, avoiding any raggedness with rounded-out ears. The overall body coat is kept short and even, which makes it easier to groom as well as maintain, and the same for the legs. They are trimmed in a round symmetry; the tail, in order to match, is also given a trim, maintaining a consistent length and reducing the fluff.

The cut is specially tailored to cater to Pomeranians living in the warmer parts of the world. It keeps them comfortable, allows their skin to breathe without getting sun-burnt as well as makes grooming much easy.

5. Hand Scissor/ Layered  Cut

A layered Pomeranian cut is basically grooming your dog's coat in a layering manner, giving it both volume as well as texture. Your pooch's double coat appears fluffy yet well balanced.

This haircut, in particular, accentuates the Pomeranian's natural hair texture and adds layers to it as desired by the groomer; the length can vary. The body fur goes from longer to shorter, forming a seam of blended layers, starting from the shoulders and making their way down to the tail. Leg fur is trimmed to let it blend into the layers; this aids in preventing matting as well as keeping the fur clean. The length of the tail can be kept both long and short, depending on your choice. The main effect is created around the neck. However, it is more subtle and blended in, giving a volumizing effect.

This haircut looks versatile and adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of your dog; however, it is high maintenance. The fluff requires regular brushing to maintain the layers and avoid the tangles. The slicker brush is essential for grooming, and regular trims are compulsory to maintain the layers and avoid any uneven texture. Last and most important, the fur needs to be kept clean and tidy at any cost; otherwise, it can trap debris and become matted, especially around the face and legs.

6. Teddy Bear

The Pomeranian Teddy bear cut is popular among owners who like a cute, rounded silhouette yet maintain their double coat's fluff.

The cut is designed such that the fur is evenly trimmed to a length between 1-2 inches, as per the dog's coat. It is uniform throughout, making it less likely to matt and easier to maintain. The legs are trimmed at a similar length to match the rest of the body. The tail is trimmed into a fluff ball and kept upright resembling that of an actual teddy bear but still blends into the fur of the body.
The most distinctive feature of this grooming style is the the shape of the head. It is trimmed in a rounded manner than makes it resemble to that of a teddy bear, even the ears are rounded to blend with the rest of the face. The muzzle is trimmed shorter than the head to make the eyes stand out with the round facial symmetry. Our groomers at times leave the fur on the ears a little long to create a fluffy appearance.

To maintain this haircut, you must make it appear fluffy at all times, which is why regular brushing is crucial for the aesthetics. Regular brushing with the slicker brush and a steel comb to avoid matting and keep the fur fluffed. Our groomers recommend getting a trim every 4-6 weeks to maintain the shape and length. Of course, you must wipe the fur down to keep it clean, especially around the eyes and mouth, where tear stains and food debris can amass.

7. Boo/Lamb  Cut

The Boo, also known as the Lamb Cut, is popular among Pomeranian owners who prefer a shorter, more plush-like look for their dog. It gives a rounded, almost plush toy-like appearance, especially around the face, ears, and eyes, with short fur throughout the body.

We can notice that it is similar to the teddy cut but with a few modifications. The fur around the body is cut really short, around 1/2 an inch to 1 inch, adding to the Pomeranian's compact appearance. The leg fur is kept short, similar to the rest of the body; it creates a cylindrical round appearance similar to that of a lamb, which is why it's called a Lamb Cut. The tail is cut short and full but is kept upright and shorter than the rest of the body, resembling a cheerleader's pom-pom.
The head is shaped in a rounded manner by trimming the facial fur short, the same as the body. Our groomers say that the rounded face shape can be achieved by trimming the fur around the cheeks, forehead, and eyes uniformly. The ears are rounded off, while they can be left pointed in a teddy cut, making this a distinctive feature of this particular grooming style. The muzzle is kept shorter, which accentuates the tidy appearance and highlights the rounded face. The paws are trimmed shorter, which helps keep them free of dirt debris and excessive fur around them.

In order to maintain a Boo/Lamb cut, you will need to visit the groomer every 4-6 weeks. This will help maintain the length and the shape of the fur, especially around the face area. Of course, extra effort is needed to maintain the plush-like appearance. Therefore, you must brush your Pomeranian regularly to keep its fur neat and plush. Remember to wipe down the fur to prevent any staining around the eyes and muzzle, especially after meals, and overall around the body to keep it neat and clean.

8. Shaved / Partly Shaved / Lion / Kennel/ Summer Cut

This haircut, in particular, is known by multiple names; however, they each are the same.
Kennel cuts are one of the most practical yet easy-to-maintain Pomeranian cuts ever. If you're a Pomeranian owner living in the warmer parts of the world with a feisty little pooch who loves playing, we recommend you try this haircut. There are a couple of more common names for this haircut, such as shaved, partly shaved, Lion cut and summer cut.

The fur is slipped short and in an even length across the body, keeping it between 1/2 inch to an inch long. Mane is the highlight, the fur around the neck and chest are kept longer such that they resemble a lion's ruff. The tail is kept short at the tip. The fur on the face is kept longer than the body but shorter than the mane. The paw fur is trimmed neatly but. Like the rest of the body, it is kept short.

While being almost similar inn every manner, the distinction between a lion cut and a Kennel cut is the overall appearance. A Kennel cut is uniform and much more practical, where the facial fur is blended into the mane, while the Lion cut fulfills the aesthetic appearance but focuses on the mane and tail of the pooch. Our groomers suggest you choose between the two based on your ease of maintenance.

NOTE: The dog isn’t shaved however their coat is trimmed very short, between half an inch and an inch. Only have professional experts attempt this style as it can damage your Pomeranian’s coat permanently if not done correctly.

9. Paw Cut

As the name suggests, this haircut solely focuses on the paws of the Pomeranian, to enhance the over all fluffy aesthetic of the Pomeranian yet, reducing the matting around this particular part. So, the overall double coat of this breed is preserved, but the grit is maintained to avoid any discomfort.

The fur around the paws is trimmed, it is brushed thoroughly to remove any tangles and then cut evenly. What our groomers do is basically trimming the fur on the top short, and then the fur between the toes is carefully trimmed with a scissor small enough for precision. The fur on the pads is clipped short as well to help the dog keep a better grip when walking or running. The edges are rounded and trimmed to add a circular shape to them.

This particular cut is designed for dogs who experience discomfort in their grit due to irritants, debris, and dirt clumps getting trapped and then forming clumps, especially those Pomeranians who indulge in outdoor activities regularly. It is diverse and can be paired with any other haircut mentioned in our guide to aid the aesthetic appeal desired by the owners.

It caters to the well-being of your dog.

10. Long Tail

The long tail cut, as the name suggests, is designed to enhance the luxurious long tail of a Pomeranian by pairing it with any grooming style chosen by the owners. The haircut paired with this grooming style must also compliment the overall body.
Some popular haircuts paired with this style are the Kennel Cut, Lion Cut, Show Cut, or Layered Cut.

The distinctive feature of this grooming style is the tail. It is left long, can be several inches long depending on the owners preference. It is then feathered out to look like a plume. It looks full, fluffy and is then brushed out. Our groomers make sure that there are no split ends, yes dogs can get split ends, to maintain the healthy neat look. Of course, it is then blended into the rest of the bodily fur to make sure it has a seamless transition.

To maintain this look, you must brush out the tail using a slicker brush to prevent any matting in the fur; because the tail is thick and full, it will be more prone to it. More visits to the groomer to maintain the fur health on the tail by giving it more frequent trims. Most importantly, the tail must be kept clean as it can easily track dirt and debris, making it clump. Regular shampooing and conditioning are extremely necessary.

We must lay emphasis on the fact that this particular style is hard to maintain and should only be considered by owners if they can  devote the time and book appointments with the groomers frequently.
